Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary can and will save your life! If you have no idea what that is, this article is for you. If you are trying to change your life, but cannot seem to stay on the right track, this article is for you. Mary led me to Jesus after I hit rock bottom.
Maybe you have already completed a consecration to Mary, so to you, I am overjoyed that we are kindred spirits! Some of you may still be on the fence about the consecration process, either because it seems too complicated, or maybe even because it seems to distract from Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the source of our salvation. Fortunately, Our Blessed Mother would never want to distract us from Jesus or keep any glory or honor for herself. It just so happens that out of all the humans who ever lived, Mary was the most conformed person to Jesus while He was physically here on earth. Since Jesus and Mary are currently alive and re-united together in Heaven, we can present ourselves to Mary and she will turn to her Son and unite us perfectly to Him with her perfect, gentle, motherly hands.
There are various books written about Marian Consecration, three of which are listed at the end of the article.
St. Louis De Montfort will tell you that this type of devotion can also be called a “renewal of the vows or promises of Holy Baptism.” We have already entered into God’s family and chosen to follow Jesus as our Savior in the powerful Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. Those vows can actually be renewed, not just once but many times, and we have a beautiful method by which we can do so through the hands of Our Blessed Mother. Her hands grasped mine at a time when I was desperately trying to find my way in life, and she led me straight back to Jesus.
As a Cradle Catholic, I never expected to have my own “prodigal son” story, but I accidentally let my faith slip away when I went to college. I began to get overwhelmed with the stress of school, and instead of clinging to God as my refuge and strength, I convinced myself it was “OK” to blow off some steam by partying on the weekends. Before I knew it, every weekend I was binge drinking, doing recreational drugs, and even sleeping around with different guys. I was addicted to pleasure, in whatever form. In other words, I became a slave to vice. I kept this up and also started to feel depressed during my sophomore and junior year of college. I was so far from God, that even when I tried to call out to him, I could not see or hear him because I was so blinded by my own sins that had taken over my life. Inevitably, at the end of my junior year (at the age of 21), I got hit in the face by life so hard that I thought it was all over.
I was driving over the speed limit, which led to me getting pulled over – and then arrested – when the police officer found my stash of marijuana and magic mushrooms. I cried so hard that night in jail; I think that was when I hit my “rock bottom.”
I tried to pick myself up but soon realized how impossible that would be by myself.
Despite thinking that God had forgotten about me, I asked Him to help me. He led me to True Devotion, which was a book given to me as a gift from a friend at church. My friend explained the “Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary,” and I knew that this was exactly the kind of significant change my spirit needed. I really did want to be more like Mary. I wanted her to guide me and teach me to be pure and holy. Jumping into the consecration process outlined in True Devotion drastically enhanced my prayer life. Inspired by the Blessed Virgin, I put all of my efforts into the prayers and meditations so that I could turn my heart away from the distractions of this world and back to God. With Our Lady’s help, I felt myself getting closer to her Son every day. After the 33-day preparation period, I completed my first Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary on December 8th, 2014.
It is clear to me that God sent the Blessed Mother to help me at a time when I needed her the most. Even my family can attest to the transformation that took place within me. After my re-version, I found such joy in receiving the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. I remember the night I went to Confession, and truly felt forgiven for the first time. A huge burden was lifted from my heart, and I let God’s love and mercy pour into me. I promised Jesus that I would do everything in my power to receive Him every day. I promised Him that I would try to stay in a state of grace or go to Confession as often as possible. I have sinned plenty of times since then, yet somehow, I do not feel the urge to do so as much as I used to. I know that Mary protects me from the major temptations that Satan used to hurl at me. Now, I am happy to follow God’s commandments without missing any of my former vices. Mary helped me get closer to Jesus, and she will do the same for everyone else who comes to her seeking her care and guidance.
“Dear friend, break the chains of sin and of sinners, of the world and the worldly, of the devil and his satellites… Let us bow down our shoulders in submission to the yoke of Wisdom incarnate, Jesus Christ, and let us not be upset by the burden of his chains.” – St. Louis de Montfort
The question to ponder is how do you rationalize/justify any of your sinful habits and how are they holding you back? God's power through Mary truly is real.
